You have planned the ultimate summer pool party. The pool liner is sparkling and full of floaties and pool toys, the food and drinks are guaranteed to please, the music is set, and the weather couldn’t be better. However, you may have missed one of the most important aspects of a summer pool party. What are you going to wear? Choosing the right outfit can be challenging. To “suit” up or not to suit up—that is the question! Here are some tips on picking the perfect pool party outfit.

Look at your guest list. What kind of party are you having? If it’s all about family, your skimpy bikini may not be your best bet. That said, if it’s old college friends, work that gorgeous swimsuit! Guys can choose their suit style and colors based on these same factors.

Think about your role at the party. Are you going to engage in an exciting game of pool volleyball or water polo? If so, choose a suit that is more supportive. Wider straps or a secure halter top are good choices. If you are more of a lounge-by-the-pool type, you can go with a sexier style. If you are grilling, wear a close-fitting cover up to protect your skin. Guys can wear a form-fitting T-shirt for an added measure of protection.

Consider swimsuit alternatives. Perhaps you don’t yet have the “beach body” you thought you would, or maybe you are simply modest. In that case, consider a vintage look. A black one-piece swimsuit, giant retro sunglasses, and a floppy hat evokes 50s glamor that allows a sense of mystery. Add a nice coverup if you still want a little something more than just a swimsuit.

Limit your jewelry. This is not the time to show off your jewelry. The chlorine can damage it, not to mention the tan lines that necklaces and bracelets can leave. If you want to dress up your look, choose a swimsuit with jeweled or metal accents. You can also add beaded or metallic sandals. In this case, less is more! If you choose to wear flip flops, make sure they are sturdy so you don’t slip. If you insist on heels, opt for wedges or espadrilles instead of risking life and limb with stilettos.

Don’t forget your face. Less is also more when it comes to pool party makeup. A tinted moisturizer with sunscreen will even out imperfections while protecting the skin. Waterproof eyeliner and mascara are a must—as well as a colorful lip balm with SPF. Don’t forget the sunglasses, perhaps one of the most important ways to accessorize in the summer. Add a smile and you will be glowing!

No matter what you choose to wear, you must have your swimsuit on—especially if you are the hostess or host. You can add a cover up, romper, or sundress, with just the hint of your top peeking out. You will look festive and even if you don’t plan on going in the pool, you never know what can happen!
